Author Rick Riordan the Actors From the Two Movie

Author Rick Riordan responds to social media discussions involving the actors from the two movie adaptations appearing in the upcoming Percy Jackson Disney+ show. Telling the story of Greek gods and young heroes in the 21st century, The Lightning Thief, the first book in Riordan's Percy Jackson & The Olympians series, was published in 2005. Since then, the series has become one of the best-selling book series of all time with 180 million copies sold worldwide. The first two Percy Jackson books received movie adaptations, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010) and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013), both of which were largely criticized by audiences and Riordan himself for their disconnect from the source material.

In 2020, Riordan officially announced that Disney+ was developing a television series that will be faithful to the Percy Jackson series and that he and his wife Becky Riordan are going to be involved in every step of the series' production process. Disney greenlit the Percy Jackson television show at the start of this year, and filming is set to begin in June in Vancouver. The main trio from the series is still being cast, but because the previous movies age-up Percy, Annabeth, and Grover, Riordan assured his fans the Disney+ show characters would be cast to represent the book accurately.

Last week, Riordan posted another Percy Jackson show update on his website and announced that the production team is beginning to discuss adult casting. During the post, Riordan responded to the numerous social media discussions about whether the Disney+ show will include stars from the two movies as adult characters, saying he doesn't know who will be cast. Riordan continued that while he acknowledged the talent of the two movies' actors, he would rather the television series be a completely fresh start. Read Riordan's full response below:

"I am not on social media anymore, thank the gods, but Becky tells me there has been some discussion about who might play what role, and if there will be anyone from the movies in the TV show. Short answer: I have no idea. We have had zero discussions about this. But: There were some very fine actors in those movies whom I feel terrible for because they had to be associated with those movies. I would never ask them to revisit that nightmare, especially when so many have gone on to wonderful, successful careers. Also: The whole point of the PJOTV is to do it fresh, do it anew from square one."

Despite both fans and Riordan vocally declaring their dislike of Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief because it departed from the book series, the movie still received praise upon its release for its actors' performances. Particular praise was given to Logan Lerman, who plays Percy in the movies, and was nominated for several awards for his performance. Perhaps because of this, fans online suggested that Lerman play Percy's father Poseidon in the upcoming show.

While Riordan's statement is unlikely to stop casting rumors and requests from circling online, it is a good reminder that there is a lot of work left to do before Percy Jackson can be properly brought to screens. It is clear from his statement that Riordan wants to fulfill expectations for the television series without promising anything that won't be delivered. Disney+'s Percy Jackson show is expected to premiere sometime next year, so fans can expect plenty more updates from Riordan before then.
